12. Attacking the Defenders

Chapter 12 · 18 min read · Subscribers
A field of dots closing in on a single ringed accent node at the center — attacking the defenders.

The newest target is the defense itself.

The previous chapter left the defender blind — single-platform, per-message moderation structurally unable to see an attack that manufactures its own room and spans surfaces it has no camera in. That is the defender losing the contest by being looked past. This chapter is about something colder: the defender losing the contest by being turned around and pointed at his own community.

For most of this book the story has run in one direction: attackers innovate, defenders react, the gap widens, repeat. That framing is correct as far as it goes, but it quietly assumes the two sides are fighting over the same ground — the room, the message, the account, the victim. They are not, anymore. Somewhere in the last few years the attacker's gaze lifted off the victim and settled on the apparatus standing between them and the victim. The moderation bot. The blocklist. The verification step at the door. The library the bot is built from. The model the moderator runs. Each of these is now a target in its own right, attacked directly, because each is a single point through which a great deal of trust flows — and a single point through which a great deal of trust flows is, to anyone thinking economically, the most valuable thing in the room.
